nerd time

So, I've pretty much been on internet hiatus from everything ever for the past year.  Except for facebook... I would never interact with anyone if I didn't hop onto facebook every few days.  Aaaaanyways, now that I've got a year of college under my belt, I feel like this whole internet thing is going to be much more manageable.  I have reasonable knowledge of what to expect from classes and other things.  Also, I'm on the hunt for a job.  No luck so far...but I'll keep soldiering on.

Continuing on with the life update:  After my first semester at UNLV, I decided that computer science wasn't 100% my thing, so I switched my focus over to mechanical engineering.  Still just as geeky, just a little less debug-y.

I've also gotten sucked into local politics by my dad.  Which turned out to not be such a bad thing.  While I was a delegate to the nevada republican state convention, I met a self-proclaimed "21st century digital boy" (that made me laugh), who suggested I start a vlog kicesie style.  Sounds like a pretty good idea to me. 

I've also taken up fencing and stage combat.  I have some pretty major bruises going on right now... but every time we start fencing I feel like Inigo Montoya...except for the dead father thing - but still prepare to die!

Other than that, I guess life goes on as normal.  I'm still a busy little bee - practice monday and tuesday, d&d tuesday, belly dance wednesday, fencing thursdays (optional) and sundays.  Oh! I forgot... I'm also getting ready to run the Ragnar Relay - Wasatch Back.  I'm excited :D  200 mile relay race, here I come!!!

insomnia - geek brain needing more internets?

Is insomnia a geek's brain telling them they need to spend more time on the internet?

I mean, honestly - when badgered with insomnia, what's the first thing we do?  That's right, boys and girls, we head to the computer.  Now, I'm here to tell you - I hate insomnia as much as the next gal.  But, has my recent internet hiatus been a catalyst or even a causing factor in this sudden urge to hop on the computer at bedtime?  Or are the tubes merely a seductive mistress calling you from sleep with their variety of bits? 

Well, I'm open to suggestion on this one.  Anyone got any theories?

So, Dungeons and Dragons is something I've been fascinated with since childhood.  An unknown world of secrecy, played by a carefully hidden sect of people.  I remember, being a child, wanting to play, but being afraid to voice my desires.  What if the rest of society as I knew it labeled me as a nerd... or even worse a geek.

Well, you can all see how well that turned out. 

And, somehow I've managed to find a group of like-minded individuals to teach me, mentor me, make jokes at my expense.  We play on Tuesdays.

No, I'm not talking about Bawls here (although thinkgeek wishes I was).  I'm talking about Red Bull Energy Drink 12 Oz. / 24 Pack Cans.  Between trying to cram an entire online AP history class, summer coming up, and an exciting datacenter move coming up - this stuff is pretty much keeping me alive.  And this particular l33t geek doesn't have her hands on any jolt cola :).

Now, for the geekfest. Rackmount Specialists/Versaweb/VegasNAP is moving into our shiny new datacenter! Our new DC is now at our facility. my geek senses are tingling - Mmm, climate control and blinky lights and whirring fans.  Definitely win!

Peter Steele - Music GOD, you will be forever worshipped.

This morning, while studying for an exam, I walked into our home office, only to be greeted with horrific news. "Peter Steele Died..." I don't know how those words came out of my mother's mouth - but they did. And, they're true.
Quite honestly, I'm not sure what to put up here - so, for now, just things about him. I mean, wikipedia has already changed him to a "former member", and his website www.petersteele.com has been down all day.

Born in the late Pleistocene age and thawed out in 1971, Peter was raised a devout catholic until he was barred from his own communion for gross flatulence. Peter discovered he could write songs upon his 1987 release from Kings County psychiatric ward after 3 weeks of observation for attempting to commit suicide with plastic eating utensils. WROCK - seriously.

So, this past weekend, I put The Triwizard Lp in my iTunes. Now, normally - I usually like importing to iTunes from MP3, but I had a gift card. Needless to say, I fell in love with the album. No wonder I've been hearing so much hype about this band! Anyone else have wizard rock (wrock) experiences? Any recommendations?

Monetizing, Sickness, and Sadness.

Let's start this off with Sadness.  Having been on www.fanfiction.net hiatus for a few years, I was very sad upon my return, early last week, to learn of one of my favorite authors passing.  Serenanna was brilliant to say the least.  Sere's fanfiction.net profile , Sere's LiveJournal

Monetizing.  TheLazyIdiot.com admin (www.thelazyidiot.com) lent me a book titled Advertising Profits From Home.  I'm about to crack it open tonight, and see what tidbits I can dig out of it.  It's not exceptionally long, and the prose seems promising.  :)  - Has anyone read this?  Any thoughts?

Sickness, I think, is my middle name.  Luckily I've found a pretty decent doctor - 3 more visits to go before I'm done for a while ... I hope.

I finally watched Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut [Blu-ray] today. I am now dying to read the graphic novel.  Having read wanted, and just now starting my voyage into V for Vendetta, I am now realizing that my love for comics really does extend beyond the manga category.  I mean, I've always loved Batman, Superman, and Spiderman - but I've been exposed to those through cartoons since I was very young.  I'd like to clarify that while I've always liked comics, it is developing into something much more.  Obsession? Love? Crazed Fanatics? 42? The number of licks to get to the Tootsie Roll Center of a Tootsie Pop? The world may never know.

So, I'm going to go out on a limb and call Hackers a classic.  If for no other reason than I find it ridiculously quotable.  I don't think I could ever go wrong with "It's in that place that I put that thing that time".  And it gives me and my mom something to bond over.  Cyberpunk hacker kids saving the day sounds like a good bonding session to me :).
